The Astor Crowne Plaza Hotel & The Alexa Royal
Located in the historic New Orleans French Quarter, these two hotels are physically connected but have different ownership interests. Moses Engineers provided the mechanical, electrical plumbing (MEP) and fire protection design services for both hotels.
The Astor is a renovated, $35 million, 12 story hotel, featuring 250 rooms, 6 large ballrooms and meeting rooms to accommodate large conventions. The facility includes a full laundry service, large catering kitchen, swimming pool and fitness center. The Bourbon House, a Brennan restaurant, occupies the hotel’s corner at the intersection of Bourbon St. and Iberville St. The Astor project added a mezzanine above the kitchen expanding the Bourbon House’s restaurant seating by 150 persons presenting many technical challenges for the kitchen’s duct work design.
The kitchen is located in the middle of the building, making it a challenge to run the kitchen duct to the outside wall. In response to this obstacle, we designed duct with several low points to drain the grease waste to catch basins before existing the building.
The Alexa Hotel is a renovated $20 million 5 story office building. The first floor of this hotel has existing retail space that remained fully functional throughout the renovation including major infrastructure upgrades to the 150 year old sewer and storm water drainage systems as well as placement of new electrical and HVAC systems.
Moses Engineers assisted the two ownership interests allocate costs. The Astor’s central plant design accommodates the additional loads of the Alexa Hotel for both chilled water and domestic water heating uses. Both hotels share an emergency power plant and a fire pump.
