Global Green – Holy Cross
Moses Engineers worked with Matthew Berman and Andrew Kitchen of Workshop and, NY to design a zero-energy affordable housing development in the Holy Cross Neighborhood of the New Orleans Lower 9th Ward; an area that had been devastated by Hurricane Katrina. The Project was for five single-family homes, an 18-unit apartment building and a community center/sustainable design and climate action center, all for certification as LEED Platinum.
These single-family units use photovoltaic panels with geothermal, high efficiency HVAC systems and incorporate a Building Dashboard to monitor and display building electrical consumption, water use, rainwater re-use, natural gas use and solar electricity production – all in real-time. The end result saves the homeowner an estimated $1,200 to $2,400 a year in utility costs allowing lower income families to qualify for mortgages that they could not have normally afforded.
